Use LOOKUP to replace VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP

Why LOOKUP beats VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP for time-based tables, what XLOOKUP adds and where INDEX and MATCH fit in a financial model.

Webinar · Recording · Presented by Joshua Grimm · 28 April 2022

Lookups are part of almost every financial model, and the method you choose affects the quality of the model. This webinar compares the main lookup functions: LOOKUP, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP and the newer XLOOKUP. For time-based tables we recommend LOOKUP over VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, because the latter two have significant drawbacks. The session also covers the strengths and weaknesses of INDEX and MATCH, the combination many financial modellers prefer.

For worked examples in Excel, see our tutorial on replacing VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP.
