The problem we solve
One team, the full range of models
Most of our work is template and platform models for project developers and investors, built once and used across a pipeline of assets. Alongside that we build transaction models, operational models, corporate and fund models, plus one-off structures with no precedent.
What connects them is the standard rather than the asset. A model has to be navigable by someone who did not build it, reconcilable against actuals and safe to change when the structure does. Models that were competent when built become unusable for want of the following three things: hard-coded for a structure that has since changed, impossible to tie back to reported numbers, or written under one accounting standard when the business now reports under two.
We are engaged both to build from scratch and to take on models built elsewhere, and we work to whichever route fits the deadline and the starting point.
The same modelling framework underpins every Forvis Mazars training course, so we can train your team on the model we build for them.
What we build
- Feasibility and investment evaluation models, for screening and internal approval
- Financing models, structured for lender scrutiny and model audit from day one
- Template models, a reusable house standard for a repeat asset class
- Operating models, budget versus actuals, medium-term planning, shareholder reporting
- Portfolio and fund models, consolidation across assets, entities, currencies and tax jurisdictions
- Corporate models, covenant testing, group forecasting and strategic option analysis
Ways to get started
Start from our template, or reconstruct what you have
Which route is right depends on whether a proven structure already fits your asset class, and on whether an existing model needs to be preserved and reconciled against.
ROUTE A
Build from a Forvis Mazars template
We hold proven base models for common asset classes, including solar and battery, wind and availability-based infrastructure. We demonstrate the base model, agree the additional features you need and customise. Fastest route to a working model.
ROUTE B
Reconstruct an existing model
Where a model already exists and carries history that must be preserved, we rebuild it to best-practice structure while reconciling back to the original. Phase one focuses on the reconstruction and the reconciliation, so you can see that nothing has been silently changed before new functionality is added.
ROUTE C
Full bespoke development
For structures with no sensible precedent, new structures, new asset classes, unique corporate models, multi-currency financings, unusual entity splits or dual accounting standards. Longer, specified in detail up front and priced on a fixed fee once the specification is agreed.
How we work
Specification first, always
The single largest cause of cost and delay in model development is starting to build before the architecture is agreed. Our first step in any development is a specification process to align the deliverable to your needs.
ROUTE 1
Start from our template
We walk your team through the relevant Forvis Mazars base model so its capabilities and structure are understood first. We then run an additional features workshop, agree what your asset or platform needs on top, and build it. The fastest route to a working model.
ROUTE 2
Rebuild an existing model
Where a model already exists, we agree the scope, reconstruct its mechanics to best practice reflecting current operations, funding and tax structures, then reconcile the rebuild back to the original. Every later difference is then explainable. Tailoring and additional functionality follow in a second phase.
ROUTE 3
Full bespoke build
For structures with no sensible precedent. A written specification is the first deliverable, followed by an initial draft model, then an Advanced Draft Model presented for your review of structure and logic before the model is finalised.
ALL ROUTES
Support, training and handover
Iterative changes as the transaction or the business moves, available on an hourly basis. Training on both the modelling approach and how to operate the model is part of handover, not a separate purchase.
Worked examples
What complexity looks like
Taiwanese offshore wind operational model
An existing financing model was no longer fit for use: difficult to operate, unable to compare actuals against budget and awkward to move between IFRS and local GAAP. We were engaged to develop a replacement as the primary business case and medium-term planning tool.
- Clear earnings split across two project entities on an agreed cost allocation basis
- Funding from eleven project finance facilities supported by seven lenders
- User-selectable facility across three currencies, with premiums payable in a fourth
- Semi-annual debt repayment with quarterly interest
- Interest rate swaps and FX hedging on a realised basis, with hedge ratio monitoring
- Best-practice ratio, debt service reserve and credit analysis outputs
- Scenario and sensitivity functionality across generation profiles, availability, loss factors, degradation, seasonality and cost flexes
Australian hybrid solar and battery model
A developer needed an internal investment evaluation model for renewable projects in the National Electricity Market, intended to become a reusable house template, not a single-transaction model.
- Built from the Forvis Mazars solar and battery base model, customised rather than written from scratch
- Hybrid solar and BESS functionality with a toggle to isolate either technology for standalone analysis
- Debt sizing for both project finance and an equity bridge loan
- Equity bridge structured separately from the senior facility, supporting construction-phase equity deferral
- Split periodicity, monthly through development, construction and delay; quarterly through operations
- Delivered in approximately five weeks against a fixed fee confirmed at specification
Both models were built to be audited. That is not a coincidence, we audit models for a living.
Why this team
We build and teach the same methodology
01
Our models are known to your lenders
Forvis Mazars models are well recognised in the infrastructure investor and lender community. A familiar structure shortens diligence and reduces the friction of a third-party review.
02
Open-source methodology
No locked cells, no hidden sheets, no proprietary add-ins required to operate the model. You own what we build and you can see all of it.
03
The audit practice informs the build
We are the number one ranked global model audit practice. Everything that practice finds going wrong in other people’s models is designed out of ours.
04
Training is part of handover
Your team is trained on both our modelling approach and your specific model as part of the engagement, so the model survives the people who commissioned it.
05
Sector specialists, not generalists
Renewables, transmission, transport, social infrastructure, digital infrastructure and resources. We have built the structure before.
06
Fixed fee against a written spec
Once the specification is agreed, the fee is fixed. Scope changes are visible and priced rather than absorbed into a schedule slip.
The same methodology is taught on our public financial modelling courses and can be delivered in-house for your team.
